Issue/Introduction

The hostdb show command has a column called Side. It usually says In or Out, but sometimes it's blank or it says N/A.

What does all this mean?

Resolution

In => host is on the inside
Out => host is on the outside
*no value  => the host has been seen, but the flow (connection) hasn't been established, so the side cannot be set.
N/A = > side is not available (for multicast and broadcast traffic)

The hostdb info command also has information about host sides, although the column is not labelled. It's the first column after the IP address.

The information is presented slightly different:
I => host is on the inside
O => host is on the outside
*no value  => the host has been seen, but the flow (connection) hasn't been established, so the side cannot be set.
- => side is not available (for multicast and broadcast traffic)

*Note:  This will only occur if you reset the table without rebooting.
