Issue/Introduction

After upgrading Reporter to a newer version, you may notice that the service starts, and then stops immediately.

When starting the service in the Windows services Management Console, you may receive the following message:

"The Blue Coat Reporter 9 service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service."

The Blue Coat Reporter 9 service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service.

The following error is logged in the "bcreporter.out" log file in the root of the installation folder of Reporter:

"Encountered server-running-file (C:/Program Files/Blue Coat Reporter 9/server_running_8081.txt) at startup when it should not yet exist -- shutting down immediately"

Resolution

NOTE: This issue is caused by the existence of the file "server_running_8081.txt" in the Reporter's root installation folder.

To Resolve the Service Starting/Stopping Issue

  1. Navigate to the root Reporter folder.
  2. Delete the "server_running_8081.txt" file.
  3. Restart the service.
