PacketShaper

Issue/Introduction

The Top Listeners window lists the IP addresses of the top hosts, but doesn't show the DNS names of the addresses. I have configured PacketShaper with a DNS server, but the Top Listeners list doesn't show the name corresponding to each IP address. How can I make this happen?

Resolution

PacketShaper is not a DNS server. It relies on the DNS server to resolve IP addresses and host names. Only if the DNS server returns a response will the PacketShaper include such information in its reports, such as Top Talkers and Top Listeners.

In many customer networks, DNS servers are configured to not resolve internal hosts, which means that host name information for internal hosts is not available to PacketShaper. Check the DNS server settings to confirm the IP addresses on the Top Talker/Listener reports are available on the DNS server.
