"Error in Loading Policy" message in VPM

Issue/Introduction

When you launch the Visual Policy Manager (VPM), you receive the error:

Error in loading Policy

Erroroccurred while loading VPM Policy

XML document structures must start and end within the same entity.

 This prevents the VPM from opening.

 You might also see error messages in the eventlog, such as:

"CE Error accessing Policy Bin Object File "$SYSTEM_BIN:$Auth$LUDD$proxyadmins":"

Resolution

The VMP-XML file is missing the correct XML tags or is corrupt. To verify this, open the VPM-XML file:

  1. Select Configuration > Policy > Policy Files.
  2. Select the Visual Policy Files tab.
  3. For the option Install VPM-XML from, select Text Editor then click Install.
  4. From the dialog that appears, select and copy the contents.
  5. Paste the contents to a text file and parse it through an XML validation tool; there are number of such tools on the web.

If the XML is incorrect ot corrupt, you can resolve the issue using one of the following methods:

  • Copy a valid VPM-XML file  from a working device. This assumes that both files are supposed to be identical. 
  • Extract file contents from a SysInfo taken before the corruption occurred.
  • If the ProxySG appliance has been backed up by Director, restore the backup following the steps outlined in the Director documentation.

If none of these options are available to you, you must delete the contents in the VPM-XML file and reconfigure the device from scratch.
