Shaping and compression are two independent functions on PacketShaper.
Shaping is used to enforce policies and partitions, enabling you to:
• Improve and protect the performance of your urgent and critical business applications
• Pace important but less urgent traffic (such as large email attachments)
• Spot and stop malicious security threats
• Limit recreational traffic and its impact on critical traffic
• Provision bandwidth for streaming applications to ensure smooth reception.
Compression compresses data, enabling more data to flow through constrained WAN links, and freeing bandwidth for the critical applications that need it.
You do not need shaping enabled for compression to work.
However, using shaping and compression together ensures that precious network resources, including the expanded capacity, go to the applications that you consider urgent and important.
