Issue/Introduction

Can the ProxySG limit the amount of time users spend on a URL or media type?
Is it possible for users to be able to view video from a web site for a configurable amount of time?
How can users view streaming media for a configurable amount of time and then be redirected once that threshold is reached?
May internet users have access to the web for just a few minutes a day, whenever they want?

Resolution

The ProxySG does not track the amount of time a user spends browsing the Internet or watching video files; that is, to allow a user to watch five or ten minutes of video before being redirected or restricted, SGOS does not have the ability to do that. The following, however, are workarounds:

  • If there is a group of people within an organization that needs access to video files, create a Web Authentication Layer to authenticate those users and also create a Rule in the Web Access Layer that allows those users to access or view certain media files, such as video files, MP3s, et c. The amount of time this group accesses a particular media file will not be restricted, but at least this group of people will have access to multimedia files. The rest of the user population can be denied access to these files.
  • If there are certain sites or category of sites that should be restricted, configure policy via the Visual Policy Manager (VPM) to only access those sites during certain times of the day. For example, allow access to www.example.com from noon to 1 PM daily, or configure policy to allow shopping.example.com to be accessed every Friday afternoon from 3 PM until 5 PM, or allow access to particular sites after business hours (from 5 PM until 8 AM) and restrict access during business hours. Within VPM, please view the "Time" column for all the various options that are available for restricting access for sites.
