Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) Intrusion Prevention (IPS) definitions stop updating on Windows 2003 Server, 32-bit

Environment

Windows Server 2003 SP1, 32-bit

Cause

This appears to happen if Windows Server 2003 is not using current Service Patch.

Resolution

This behavior has been observed on Windows Server 2003 SP1. After applying SP2, IPS definitions resume updating normally.
