Issue/Introduction

When WinPE has been previously installed on the server, the existing components must be cleaned up before you can reinstall and re-import WinPE (Windows PE) within Deployment Solution (DS) 8.x.

Environment

Deployment Solution 8.x

Note: If you are installing WinPE 10/11 for the first time, you may skip the cleanup steps described below.

Resolution

1. Reinstall the Windows ADK

Follow Step 1 in KB Download, Install then Import Windows Preboot Operating Systems Into Ghost Solution Suite 3.X (Console Installation) for GSS to correctly download and install the required ADK files.
Uninstall any currently installed ADK components, then reinstall them as instructed in the referenced article.

2. Regenerate WinPE in BootWiz

After reinstalling the ADK, regenerate the WinPE configuration by completing the following steps:

  1. Locate and edit the PreBootOs.ini file on the NS server:
    \Program Files\Altiris\Deployment\BDC\bootwiz\PreBootOs.ini

  2. For each preboot environment you want to re-import, find the line:
    INSTALLED=True

    Change it to:
    INSTALLED=False

  3. This change forces the system to treat WinPE as not yet installed, enabling a clean re-import.

  4. Save the updated PreBootOs.ini file and restart the SMP (Symantec Management Platform) Console (close and relaunch your browser session).

  5. Open the Preboot Configuration page:
    Settings → Deployment → Create Preboot Configuration

  6. Follow the on-screen prompts to download and reinstall the required Windows ADK components.
