Issue/Introduction

Symantec Endpoint Encryption 11.1.2 introduced the virtual keyboad feature which enables users of touch screen devices to authenticate at preboot without needing a physical keyboard. However, some devices might not support this feature.

Environment

  • A 64-bit tablet device or a touch screen-enabled hybrid laptop.
  • Microsoft Windows running in UEFI mode.

Resolution

Symantec provides a utility that you can use to test touch screen-enabled devices for compatibility with the virtual keyboard feature that was introduced in Symantec Endpoint Encryption 11.1.2. This feature is available only on Windows devices that are running in UEFI mode.

Before running the Symantec Endpoint Encryption Touch Test Tool in the preboot environment, you must first create a bootable USB drive.

To create the bootable USB drive:

  1. Download the testing utility (bootx64.efi) that is attached to this knowledge article.
  2. Format a USB drive using the FAT32 file system.
  3. In the root directory of the USB drive create the EFI folder.
  4. Inside the EFI folder, create the BOOT sub-folder.
  5. Copy the bootx64.efi file to the BOOT sub-folder.

Before you run the Symantec Endpoint Encryption Touch Test Tool:

  • If you are testing a hybrid device, i.e. a laptop or notebook that has a touch screen, ensure that you raise the priority of USB boot devices in the boot sequence.
  • Ensure that the device that you are testing is powered off.

To run the Symantec Endpoint Encryption Touch Test Tool:

  1. Connect the USB boot drive and power on the device that you want to test.
    If you are testing a tablet device, hold down the Power button and the Volume Down button simultaneously for a few seconds. This will make the tablet boot up using the USB drive.
    Note: Depending on the device, you might have to perform a different step to boot from a USB drive. For information, refer to the official device documentation.
  2. When the Symantec Endpoint Encryption Touch Test Tool user interface appears, one of the following will occur:
    • If the system does not support the virtual keyboard feature, the following error message is displayed:
      Failed to locate a physical device mapping for absolute pointer protocol.
      Touch protocol failed.
    • If the system supports the virtual keyboard feature, you are prompted to tap a series of red squares that appear on the screen. If the test is successful, the following message is displayed:
      Touch test passed!
  3. Power off the device and disconnect the bootable USB drive before you boot up the device again.
