Issue/Introduction

After copying settings from one Symantec Protection Engine (SPE) server to another users will receive email notifications and logs will show error messages.

"The Symantec Protection Engine has encountered a critical error Date/time of event = 20XX-01-XX 09:24:25 Event Severity Level = Error Error Message = Failed to decrypt the Rapid Release FTP Password. Symantec Protection Engine IP address = XX.XXX.XXX.XX Uptime (in seconds) = 2"

Cause

Each installation of SPE uniquely encrypts the password within the liveupdate.xml file.

This happens if you copy SPE settings from one installation to another.

Resolution

It is advised to reinstall SPE and manually configure settings through the settings CLI or GUI rather than to copy .xml files between installations.

This will only effect the use of Rapid Release FTP downloads.

You can ignore this message/s if Rapid Release FTP downloads are not used.

We can manually set the password using xmlmodifier tool.
The command can be referred in the command line reference guide of that SPE version.

-> User Name
Default value: anonymous
xmlmodifier -s
//liveupdate/RapidRelease/FTPSettings/UserName/@value <value>
liveupdate.xml
Allowed values
■ Valid String

-> Password
Default value: anonymous
xmlmodifier -k
//liveupdate/RapidRelease/FTPSettings/Password/@value <password>
<SPE install directory> liveupdate.xml
Allowed values
■ FTP password
