Console settings for unscannable files are not honored after upgrading to Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange 7.5

Issue/Introduction

After upgrading to 7.5 from 6.5 or 7.0, Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE) no longer honors settings configured in the UFR - Malformed Files or UFR - Scanning Limits section of the console under Policies -> Exceptions; and instead Quarantines files regardless of the action configured or Trusted Domain settings.

Cause

During Upgrade, an invalid registry entry is written, causing SMSMSE to revert to default actions.

Resolution

This issue is fixed in SMSMSE 7.5.6, upgrade to 7.5.6 to resolve this issue.

Workaround

Change the invalid registry value to a valid value.

To change the registry value to a valid value:

1. Open the registry editor (Start -> Run, Regedit)
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\Symantec\SMSMSE\7.5\Server\Policies\Standard\ExceptionSubpolicy\UnscannableFileMalformedRule.
3. Edit the value RuleTypeEnum.
4. Change the "Base" type to Decimal, and change the value to 21.
5. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\Symantec\SMSMSE\7.5\Server\Policies\Standard\ExceptionSubpolicy\UnscannableFileScanningLimitsRule.
6. Edit the value RuleTypeEnum.
7. Change the "Base" type to Decimal, and change the value to 20.
8. Restart the Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange service.

After making the above registry change, SMSMSE will now take the action as configured in the console.
