Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange

Issue/Introduction

When attempting to view the home page of Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE) instead of the statistics as expected, the console returns "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 127.0.0.1:58081" or "Received invalid response from the component". In addition, the Monitors -> Server status page is blank, and returns similar errors.

Cause

When a netstat -abon is run, a process other than CmafReportSrv.exe is listening at  127.0.0.1:58081. This causes the SMSMSE console to connect to a process that does not know how to process the statistics requests the console is issuing.

Resolution

Change the port used by the SMSMSE reporting components to an unused port.

To change the port

  1. Open the registry editor on the affected server (Start -> Run, Regedit).
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\Symantec\CmaF\<version>\Reporting registry hive.
  3. Create a new DWORD value, rename it to ReportingServerPort (case sensitive).
  4.  Choose the value of an open port (netstat -a can assist in finding an open port) such as 58082 and set the ReportingServerPort key to this value. Make sure the registry editor is set to "Decimal" and not "Hexadecimal".
  5. Restart the Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange and Symantec Mail Security Utility services.

After taking the above steps, the SMSMSE console should no longer display errors, and should successfully display statistics and server status.
