The client is currently running CA Optimizer release 7.0 which is used to optimize OS/VS COBOL programs. The client would like to know why an upgrade is required for CA Optimizer 7.0 to run under z/OS 2.2 and or z/OS 2.3 ? What is not compatible (what will break) if we do not upgrade?
When a program is CA Optimized a stub is appended to the load module. The CA Optimizer runtime must be started, which is usually at IPL time by CAS9 CAIRIM in order for the program to execute. If the CA Optimizer runtime is not active the optimized program being executed will abend.
In November 2013 CA announced End of Life for the CA Optimizer r 7.0 Runtime. As per the link below clients are entitled to a free copy of the CA Optimizer/II runtime. At this time the latest release of CA Optimizer/II is r 8.5. The CA Optimizer/II r 8.5 runtime takes the place of the CA Optimizer R 7.0 runtime. So sites currently running the CA Optimizer r 7.0 runtime must upgrade to a supported runtime release.
The z/os 2.2 and 2.3 certification was only done on the CA Optimizer/II r 8.5 runtime which is now the only supported runtime.

CA Optimizer Runtime
End of Life Announcement
Date: November 2013
To: CA Optimizer Runtime Customers
From: The CA Technologies CA Optimizer Product Team
Subject: End of Life Announcement for CA Optimizer Runtime
CA Technologies is continually working to improve our software and services to best meet the needs of our customers. In order to focus our development efforts and to help our customer base achieve their strategic business initiatives, we are investing our resources in new technology and software and will be dropping support for CA Optimizer Runtime.
In accordance with our CA Support Policy and Terms (https://support.ca.com), please consider this letter your written notification of this End of Life. This means CA Optimizer Runtime will no longer be enhanced and that maintenance and technical support will be discontinued beginning November 15, 2014. However, CA Technologies will honor any existing contractual requirements to sustain support on this product that may exist between you and CA Technologies.
CA Optimizer and CA Optimizer Runtime License customers are being provided access to install the CA Optimizer/II Runtime library, at no cost. The CA Optimizer/II Runtime library will then act as the run time library for all CA-optimized programs. The ability to compile and optimize OS/VS COBOL programs is not affected by this; therefore no recompiles are needed. Should you require recompiling an OS/VS program, you can still use CA Optimizer to ensure that the program is optimized for peak performance.
In order to assist you with your planning, we are offering the following:
• A no-charge software upgrade from CA Optimizer Runtime to CA Optimizer II Runtime for any customer with an active maintenance contract. To take advantage of this offer, contact CA Customer Care at +1-800-225-5224 in North America or see http://www.ca.com/phone for the local number in your country.
