Issue/Introduction

You're deploying an image through DSS 3.x and you're not using Sysprep.  The image downloads successfully and the machine reboots to the production OS.  You're using the post configuration process through GSS.  The machine is failing to join the domain and you receive the following error in the netsetup.log file, "Function exits with status of: 0x54b".

Function exits with status of: 0x54b

Environment

GSS 3.x

Not using Sysprep

Using the built in post configuration process through GSS

Cause

The issue here is that the Dagent service is starting and performing the post configuration process before the network stack is completely built.  Because of this, the domain join fails because the machine is unable to located the domain.

Resolution

The solution is to set a delayed start on the Altiris Deployment Agent service.

  • Open your services
  • Right click on the Altiris Deployment Agent service and choose Properties
  • On the General tab locate the Startup type:
  • Click on the drop down arrow and choose the Automatic (Delayed Start) option - The default for this delayed start is 120 seconds.  You can change this using the SC command.

If you're comfortable with the SC command you can also make this change from a command prompt.
