Issue/Introduction

Microsoft Update: CRUW-001-Windows6.1-KB3125574-v4-x64.msu continually fails to install after initially successfully installing.

Exit Code 2359302

 

Cause

Confirmed the target rule for Software Update is in order as detailed by the vendor.

Found the ComponentBasedServicing registry returned for this Software Update KB3125574 failed to initially install successfully: 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\ApplicabilityEvaluationCache\Package_for_KB3125574~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.4.4] 
"ApplicabilityState"=dword:00000070 
"CurrentState"=dword:00000060 

The CurrentState needs to equal 00000070 in order for the update to have been successfully installed. It appears the Software Update Cycle completed and KB3125574 failed to install due to an anomaly on the Operating System, or the Client needed a reboot to update the targeted files.

Environment

Client: Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise x64

Resolution

Work through the following:

  1. Reboot the Client and await the Windows System Assessment Scan run on schedule; allow for the NS.Windows Patch Remediation Settings scheduled task to run on the SMP following returned scan data and the update should re-target accordingly.
     
  2. Check the following key for review after the reboot: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\ApplicabilityEvaluationCache\Package_for_KB3125574~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.4.4] 
     
  3. If the Software Update continues to fail updating the targeted file and show installed; uninstall the Software Update KB3125574 from the Add/Remove > Show Installed Updates, and run the Software Update Cycle again and review the System Logs if the Software Update continues to fail.
