Issue/Introduction

This article contains information on using WinPE files with Symantec Drive Encryption 10.4 in a Windows Preinstallation Environment.

Resolution

The Windows Preinstallation Environment (WinPE) is widely used by IT professionals in Windows environments for installation tasks, deployment, maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnosis and recovery.

See the attached Technical Note that provides instructions for creating the following types of WinPE images:

• 32-bit WinPE 1.x - Windows XP
• 32-bit WinPE 2.0 - Windows Vista
• 64-bit WinPE 2.0 - Windows Vista
   
• 32-bit WinPE 3.0 - Windows 7
• 64-bit WinPE 3.0 - Windows 7
   
• 32-bit WinPE 4.0 - Windows 8
• 64-bit WinPE 4.0 - Windows 8
   
• 32-bit WinPE 5.0 - Windows 8.1
• 64-bit WinPE 5.0 - Windows 8.1
   
• 32-bit WinPE for Windows 10
• 64-bit WinPE for Windows 10
   

In addition, it includes instructions for integrating the Symantec Drive Encryption driver into:

• IBM Lenovo ThinkPad Rescue and Recovery 3.0 and above
• Microsoft Windows XP Recovery Console

Note: Support for 64-bit WinPE was first introduced with Symantec Drive Encryption 10.3.0.
