After installing the Java Remote Console for the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) on Windows Small Business Server 2011 when trying to open the console to access another SEPM remotely the remote console will not launch and open as expected.  After clicking on the icon to launch, there is a quick java popup and then it closed and open and login process using the console is interrupted.

In Windows Small Business Server 2011 the Java installer does not register or set by default the file association of the .jnlp files to the Java Web Start Launcher.

The resolve this issue, the administrator has to manually set up the .jnlp file association to the Java Web Start Launcher.

  1. Go to the control panel and select "Programs"
  2. Under "Default Programs" select "Make a file type always open in a specific program"
  3. Scroll down the list of file types and locate ".jnlp", then select "Change Program.." in the top left corner
  4. In the new window locate select "Java Web Start Launcher" and click OK, which will associate that file extension to the correct application.
