Microsoft Bulletin: MS15-058-SQLServer2008-KB3045305-x64.exe continually fails to install on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard x64

Executing either of the following CMDs fails to update the targeted file at: E:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\BINN\SQLSERVR.EXE, for it is still at the vulnerable version 2007.100.5512.0:

  • SQLServer2008-KB3045305-x64.exe /Q /HIDECONSOLE /allinstances
  • SQLServer2008-KB3045305-x64.exe /Q /HIDECONSOLE /instancename=|MSSQLSERVER|

Exit Code: -2145124329

Running the Software Update manually shows errors:

  • There are validation errors on this page. Click OK to close this dialog box. Review the errors at the bottom of Setup page, then provide valid parameters or click Help for more information.

Reviewed Setup page and found:

  • There are no SQL Server instances or shared features that can be updated on this computer.

Confirmed the IsApplicable/IsInstalled=TRUE rule logic is accurately targeting. Appears there is corruption in this particular case regarding the SQL Server instances and their ability to be updated.

Repair of the SQL Instance or Service Pack is in order, or review with Microsoft Corp. as to why this is failing to update the targeted SQLSERVR.EXE file.
