Issue/Introduction

During an upgrade we cannot modify the server.xml in the updates folder.  Whenever we re-run the upgrade the server.xml file gets overwritten, we lose our changes, and the upgrade fails to start.

Cause

When start_upgrade_wizard.bat is run either manually or via the UI it runs updateFramework_windows_1_0.exe which overwrites the modified server.xml file in the \SymantecDLP\Protect\updates\<update-id>\framework\conf folder.

Resolution

We need to launch the upgrade server manually after creating the framework files initially and modifying them with our settings.

  1. Run the upgrade for the first time.  This will create the framework files.
  2. The upgrade will fail.  Stop the upgrade.
  3. Modify the server.xml file within the updates folder (\SymantecDLP\Protect\updates\<update-id>\framework\conf) with the needed settings.
  4. Navigate to \SymantecDLP\Protect\updates\<update-id>\framework\bin and run the StartServer.bat file.
  5. The upgrade will proceed as expected without overwriting the changes made to server.xml.
