Issue/Introduction


You have attempted to upgrade an existing version of Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE) or uninstall an existing version of Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE) and received a popup error:

You have then attempted a manual removal of Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange.

After the removal a new installation attempt was performed resulting in an error "Failed to register SMSUtilityService.exe". 


 

 


Additional investigation into the issue discovers the following Event Viewer Application logs:

(Note: From the errors above the key component for identifying this specific issue is:  Microsoft.VC80.CRT, processArchitecture="AMD64")

 

 

Cause


The issue appears to be caused by a malfunctioning Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 runtime component.  The original cause for the issue is unknown and has not been investigated due to the below solution currently working for all instances of this issue.


 

Resolution


To resolve the issue install the latest update for "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update"

The packages are available for download from the following location:  (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26347)

Please install the following packages:

  • vcredist_x86.EXE
  • vcredist_x64.EXE

Once the packages are installed perform the following steps:

  1. Uninstall Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange  (Note:  You may need to use the manual removal script linked above)
  2. Reboot the server
  3. Install Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange
