Issue/Introduction

With Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) 12.1 RU5 installed, the list of available media files in Avid Media Composer takes a significantly longer amount of time to appear. During this time, Avid Media Composer appears to be unresponsive. This happens in environments where media files are loaded by inserting Sony XDCAM Drives into the USB reader while the application is open.

This issue is not observed when running older versions of SEP.

Cause

This appears to be caused by the Auto-Protect Read Cache added in SEP 12.1 RU5. The caching of files increases the amount of data read by SEP before scanning, leading to the delay.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in SEP 12.1 RU6 MP7 and SEP 14 MP1.

Download the latest version of Symantec Endpoint Protection

If it is not possible to upgrade, the following workaround can be used to avoid the issue:

Note: Tamper Protection must be disabled to make these registry changes. To disable Tamper Protection, read How to disable Tamper Protection in Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.

Disable the Read Cache

  1. Navigate to one of the following registry keys, depending on the version of Windows:
    • 64-bit Windows: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\AV\Storages\Filesystem\RealTimeScan
    • 32-bit Windows: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\AV\Storages\Filesystem\RealTimeScan
  2. Create a new DWORD value under this key and name it ReadCache.
  3. Set the value of ReadCache to 0.
  4. Restart the computer.
