Issue/Introduction

Symantec Advanced Threat Protection (SATP) appliance only negotiates 1GB speed when connected to a 10GB switch or router

Cause

The known causes for SATP appliance to negotiate only 1GB when a 10GB speed is expected are:

  • SATP is deployed as SATP VE or SATP 8840 model. Neither of these models has the specialty hardware Network Interface Card (NIC) which permits negotiating 10GB speeds.
  • On SATP 8880 model, the Management interface is hosted on a Broadcom NIC rather than the specialty bypass NIC which permits negotiating 10GB speeds.
  • The model of the switch or router where SATP 8880 is connected does not support 10GB speed.
  • The model of the switch or router where SATP 8880 is connected does not support auto-negotiation at 10GB speed.
  • The port of the switch or router which is connected to the specialty bypass NIC of SATP 8880 appliance model is not configured to auto-negotiate for 10GB speed.
  • The cable connecting SATP 8880 model appliance to the switch or router is not rated for 10GB speed.

 

Resolution

  1. Using the service tag, re-check the model of SATP appliance. For steps, see:
    Confirm whether an appliance you received is a SATP, SWG, or SMG appliance
     
  2. Check whether the lower speed appears on the Management NIC.
  3. Re-confirm the model and hardware/software/firmware/BIOS versions of the router or switch connected to the SATP 8880 appliance port that is not negotiating 10GB speed.
  4. Check documentation for the switch or router to confirm that model supports 10GB speed, and how to configure the port on that device for 10GB speed.
