Internet Explorer crashes after starting when Symantec Endpoint Protection is installed

Internet Explorer opens, briefly displays its window, then closes. IE may also continue to stay open but display a "website restore error" and display an "Internet Explorer has stopped working" error with APPCRASH details.

Cause

Symantec is aware of this issue and is investigating.

Running IE as administrator or via Metro interface works OK. The symptoms appear to occur otherwise only when running IE as a limited user and the following two conditions are both present:

  • EPM ("Enable Enhanced Protected Mode") is selected in Windows Internet Options, Advanced, Security.
  • The SEP client has been updated from Symantec's LiveUpdate site or via manually downloaded Intelligent Updater.

If SEP client is managed and updated from SEPM, or if EPM is disabled, the symptoms do not occur.

Resolution

This article will be updated as new information becomes available.

Current possible workarounds: disable Windows Enhanced Protected Mode or use a managed SEP client that is receiving updates from SEPM.

Applies To

This has been reported in Internet Explorer 11, Windows 8.1, with SEP 12.1 installed.
