Issue/Introduction

Dell E6540 Laptop does not recognize internal token/CAC reader or external keyboard/mouse at PBA (Pre-Boot Authentication) when laptop power adapter is plugged in.

All USB devices will fail after SEE Full Disk is installed when running off the power adapter, but work normally when running off the laptop's battery.

No errors, devices just fail to work.

Cause

Dell BIOS A07 and earlier versions contained documented power management issues with the factory power adapter which affect anything on the USB bus which includes keyboards, mice and internal or external token/CAC readers (both types also utilize the USB bus).

Resolution

Upgrade Dell E6540 BIOS to A08 which contains a fix for the power management issues.

Applies To
