Data Loss Prevention Enforce

Issue/Introduction

While installing a new V9.x you receive the following error:

Error message: Your Oracle settings do not currently support multi-byte characters. It is highly recommended that you make the following change before continuing.

--Run as sys user
ALTER SYSTEM SET nls_length_semantics='CHAR' SCOPE=BOTH;

Click "OK" to continue with the install, or "Cancel" to cancel the install and correct the problem.

Resolution

Page 34 of the Oracle_Guide.pdf says:

6 During the 10.2.0.4 upgrade, Oracle changes the undo_retention and
nls_length_semantics parameters to their default values. Enter the following
commands to change these parameters to the Symantec Data Loss Prevention
recommended values.

SQL> alter system set undo_retention=10800 scope=both;
SQL> alter system set nls_length_semantics='CHAR' scope=both;

==================================

Description:

"Setting nls_length_sematics='CHAR' is required for proper handling of characters from any language that uses multi-byte characters in its character set. This setting takes effect at the time the tables are created, so if it is set incorrectly now and multi-byte support becomes necessary in the future changing the setting at that time will not correct the problem. If there is any possibility of multi-byte characters in the messages or files that are being monitored, it must be set correctly before installation."

Solution

1. Uninstall Symantec DLP

2. Make the following DB change before continuing.

--Run as sys user
ALTER SYSTEM SET nls_length_semantics='CHAR' SCOPE=BOTH;

3. Reinistall Vontu with "select the Initialize Enforce Data" option to overwrite the existing Enforce schema and all data. Note that this action cannot be undone. If this check box is selected, the data in your existing Symantec Data Loss Prevention database is destroyed after you click Next.
