Issue/Introduction

When you try to install or upgrade ITMS, the following error occurs:

IT Management Suite products cannot be installed or upgrade fails due to the "PerformInstall - RunMsiInstallProduct(): Install Package <xxxx> InstallAlreadyRunning" error

The Windows Installer API returns with:

Return Code: 1618

Description: Another installation is already in progress. Complete that installation before proceeding with this install.

Error Code: ERROR_INSTALL_ALREADY_RUNNING

Environment

ITMS 8.x

Resolution

 If you see the "InstallAlreadyRunning" error, perform the following steps:

  1. Pause Microsoft .NET framework NGEN x86 and Microsoft .NET framework NGEN  x64 services.
  2. Make three attempts to install the same ITMS version with a time interval of one minute. (If _MSIexecute mutex is set)
  3. If any of the three attempts succeeds, Symantec Installation Manager (SIM) proceeds to install the package. If all the three attempts fail, restart the machine or manually check the issue before retrying installation. Ensure that MSI logging is enabled while retrying the installation.
  4. After installation is successful, resume Microsoft .NET framework NGEN x86 and Microsoft .NET framework NGEN  x64 services before proceeding to the next steps
