Unable to add windows 8 or 8.1 source files to Deployment Solution 7.5.

From the Symantec Management Console while using the Import OS Files feature the following error may be seen after tying to add the sources folder from the windows 8 or later OS DVD or mounted ISO.

Error occured while uploading the files.

At the same time the following error can be seen in the altiris application log viewer

Failed to add file to package repository: The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters.

A workaround for this may be to use the ResourceImportTool.exe located in “C:\Program Files\Altiris\Deployment\Tools” on the NS server.

  1. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Altiris\Deployment\Tools right click and run as administrator on the ResourceImportTool.exe
  2. Select the OS File Import tab
  3. Name your os file package and give it a description
  4. Choose the OS Platform from the dropdown. +
  5. Click the Add OS Files and browse to the sources folder of the OS install disk you are trying to use and click ok.
  6. Click Import
