Running Microsoft’s System Preparation Tool (sysprep) causes Symantec Workspace Virtualization (SWV) and Streaming (SWS) agents to display errors after rebooting the system.

After running Sysprep or Citrix generates a new VDI, once the OS  is booted, an error is displayed when you attempt to import or activate a layer with SWV or stream an application with SWS.

SWV Errors:
Importing a layer
Activating any existing layer
SWS Error

The sysprep command removes unique information from your Windows installation, which enables you to reuse that image on different computers. SWV creates certain registry values using the VolumeGUID of the system drive at the time when it was installed, but the system drive’s VolumeGUID gets changed as part of the Sysprep process.
The citrix VDI environments generate new volume GUIDs and reference the volume guid from the master image.

SWS 7.5

SWS 7.6

Upgrade SWV to 7.5 SP1 HF3 or above

To fix the problem automatically run the Sysprepfix utility (see attachment) to update the affected registry values with the new VolumeGUID.

If you prefer to fix the problem yourself, follow these steps:

  1. From a command prompt, run mountvol.exe C: /L to find the new VolumeGUID for C:\
  2. Open the registry editor:
    1. Update the value of DefaultFileRedirect found in this registry key:
      1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\FSLX\Parameters\FSL
    2. Update the value of FileRedirect for any existing layers registry keys, for example:
      1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\FSLX\Parameters\FSL\1
      2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\FSLX\Parameters\FSL\2
      3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\FSLX\Parameters\FSL\3
      4. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\FSLX\Parameters\FSL\4
  3. Reboot (optional).
