"Unexpected error" occurs when adding Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager replication partner with FIPS mode enabled

Issue/Introduction

You are trying to add a replication partner for your Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM), but this process fails even though the server address and credentials you use are correct. Both servers are in FIPS mode.

 Unexpected error.

Cause

The file cryptoj.jar is missing from its class path. This path is normally jre\lib\ext, within the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager installation folder.

Resolution

Symantec is aware of this issue and will update this document when a solution becomes available. It is not necessary to log a support case on this issue. Please subscribe to this article to be notified of any updates. 

To work around this issue, open SEPM_installation\bin\sca.bat with a plain text editor and then add the following line:

-Djava.ext.dirs="C:\SEPMFIPS;SEPM_installation\jre\lib\ext"

where SEPM_installation is the installation folder for Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager. The default locations for this folder are as follows:

  • For a 64-bit operating system: C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager
  • For a 32-bit operating system: C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager
