There are several different versions of Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1 definitions available for download and distribution tasks in LiveUpdate Administrator 2.x (LUA 2.x). Which SEP 12.1 definitions are correct for my environment?

Several options are available:

If the correct version is not chosen for download and distribution, then SEP 12.1 clients or SEPMs in the environment will not be able to successfully update.  An example can be seen in Some LiveUpdate Administrator 2.x Servers Fail to Provide Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1 RU2 Definitions

Additional information is available in the Connect Forum article LiveUpdate Administrator: Product Selection Guide.

Always select the SEP 12.1 definitions which match the version(s) of SEP 12.1 that are in use in the organization.  LUA 2.x is not automatically re-configured when the SEPM or SEP clients are upgraded.
The format/structure of the definitions does not need to be re-engineered every time a new release of SEP 12.1 comes out. It changes every so often, but not with every single release.
The correct definitions for SEP 12.1 (RTM), SEP 12.1 RU1, and SEP 12.1 RU1 MP1 remains the Symantec Endpoint Protection v12.1 content.
The correct definitions for SEP 12.1 RU2 and SEP 12.1 RU3 remains the Symantec Endpoint Protection v12.1 RU2 content.
The correct definitions for SEP 12.1 RU4 and SEP 12.1 RU4 MP1 is the Symantec Endpoint Protection v12.1 RU4 content.
SEP 12.1 RU4 also introduces several new definition types that correspond to new SEP for Mac features.  Be sure to use Symantec Endpoint Protection v12.1 RU4 contents to update these Macintosh clients. Additional information on what is new for Windows and Macs in SEP 12.1.4 can be found in New fixes and features in Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.4.

The optional tool LiveUpdate Administrator 2.x is in use on the network.  A Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) or self-managed ("unmanaged") SEP client that retrieves contents directly from the Internet source servers will not need any special configuration to download the appropriate materials.
