Issue/Introduction

When storing a backup on an FTP server using anonymous access, a zero length file is created on the FTP server but the backup is never uploaded.

Cause

This is caused by insufficient permissions for the anonymous user. The SMG control center first tests the ability to connect and create a file on the FTP server by uploading a zero length file. If that succeeds the appliance generates the backup file and then attempts to overwrite the zero length file with the backup file. In some cases, the anonymous user can create a file on the FTP server but cannot overwrite an existing file. If this is the case, the SMG backup will fail to be uploaded to the FTP server.

Resolution

This is a known situation and is by design.

Workaround

This issue may be avoided by a number of methods

  • Store backups on the control center applaince
  • Modify the permissions for the anonymous account such that the anonymous user can overwrite files
  • Create a credentialed account on the FTP server which can overwrite files
