BUG REPORT: Symantec File Share Encryption creating network traffic when not enabled via Consumer Policy

Issue/Introduction

Symantec File Share Encryption creating unnecessary network traffic caused by PGPfsshl.dll. The PGPfsshl.dll does the overlay for windows icons in association with Symantec File Share Encryption and is tied to Windows Explorer. Customers have brought to our attention that disabling the Symantec File Share Encryption via Consumer Policy on the Symantec Encryption Management Server does not disable this functionality and actually makes it so you can't disable this feature.

Resolution

Symantec Corporation is committed to product quality and satisfied customers. This issue is currently being considered by Symantec Corporation to be addressed in a forthcoming version or Maintenance Pack of the product.  Please be sure to refer back to this document periodically as any changes to the status of the issue will be reflected here.

 

The following is a known work around for this issue which should only be used if you do not have any clients that need Symantec File Share Encryption functionality:

 

Step 1: To disable/unregister the PGP NetShare overlay dll (PGPfsshl.dll), perform all of following steps:
1. Click Start>Run.
2. In the Run field type cmd.
3. At the command prompt Type "regsvr32 /u PGPfsshl.dll"
4. Click OK (A Regsvr32 message will appear stating the command was executed successfully and the PGPfsshl.dll has been unregistered)
5. Type exit to close the command prompt window.
The next step requires modifying Windows Registry settings. Always backup current Windows registry prior to making modification to Windows Registry settings. Step 2. To disable the Components for Symantec File Share Encryption (previously PGP Netshare) you need to disable this functionality via WindowsRegistry settings.
This is for Windows 64 bit system only
1. Click on Windows Start Button.

2. In the run box type "regedit" and hit enter

3. Left side pane browse for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Wow6432Node>PGP Corporation>PGP

4. Right side pane right click PGP_INSTALL_NETSHARE select Modify

5. Change the Value data: 0

6. Reboot the Computer to reload this registry value.

Alternate STEP2: To disable the Process for Netshare on Windows 32 bit systems.
This is for Windows 32 bit systems only
1. Click on Windows Start Button

2. Type "regedit" and hit enter

3. Left side pane browse for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>PGP Corporation>PGP

4. Right side pane right click PGP_INSTALL_NETSHARE and select Modify

5. Change the Value Data: 0

6. Reboot the Computer to reload this registry value.
