Issue/Introduction

How to manually update the Virus and Spyware definitions content included with Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) 12.1 client installation packages exported from the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM).

Resolution

Prerequisites

This procedure requires an exported client package for the version of Windows you are installing to. If you are installing to both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows computers, you will need exported client installation packages for both the 32-bit and 64-bit version of the SEP client. This procedure does not work with single .exe file installation packages.

You will also need copies of the latest Virus and Spyware definitions content from your Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM).

Locating the latest Virus and Spyware definitions content

  1. Open a Windows Explorer window and browse to the manager's inetpub\content folder (C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\inetpub\content on 32-bit computers, C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\inetpub\content on 64-bit computers).
  2. Open the folder named after the corresponding client moniker associated with the content you wish to update:
    • {535CB6A4-441F-4e8a-A897-804CD859100E} for 32-bit computers
    • {07B590B3-9282-482f-BBAA-6D515D385869} for 64-bit computers
  3. Open the folder with the latest set of definitions (directories are numbered - yymmddrrr where y=year, m=month, d=day, r=revision)
  4. Locate the full.zip file inside this folder.

Updating the client package

  1. Open a Windows Explorer window and browse to the folder containing the installation files (if you are using a single .exe package, you must extract the installation files to a folder before proceeding).
  2. Delete VDefs.zip file from the folder.
  3. Copy the full.zip from the manager into the folder containing the installation files.
  4. Rename the copy of the full.zip to VDefs.zip.

You can use the updated installation package with whatever deployment method you normally use to install the SEP clients in your environment.
