Issue/Introduction

The option to use the CAST5 cipher for PGP Virtual Disks has been removed from Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3.1 for Mac OS X. If you have encrypted any virtual disks using this algorithm, you will be unable to access that data using this version of Symantec Encryption Desktop for Mac OS X.

Resolution

To access your encrypted data once you have upgraded to Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3.1, you have the following two options.

Option 1:

  1. Move the unmounted virtual disk file to a system where you can access the virtual disk using a version of Symantec Encryption Desktop that supports CAST5 (Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3.1 or earlier for Windows, or Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3.0 or earlier for Mac OS X).
  2. Mount the disk. Copy data from the virtual disk to the local drive.
  3. Create a new virtual disk based on another algorithm.
  4. Copy the data into the new virtual disk, using any algorithm other than CAST5.
  5. Unmount the disk.
  6. Move the virtual disk file back to the Mac OS X system.

You can now access the PGP Virtual Disk, and the data on the disk, using Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3.1 for Mac OS X.

Option 2:

  1. Move the virtual disk to a system where you can access the virtual disk using a version of Symantec Encryption Desktop that supports CAST5 (Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3.1 for Windows or Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3.0 or earlier for Mac OS X).
  2. Mount the disk. Copy data from the virtual disk to the local drive.
  3. Create a new virtual disk based on another algorithm.
  4. Copy the data into the new virtual disk (using any algorithm except CAST5).
  5. Unmount the disk.
  6. Move the virtual disk back to the Mac OS X system.

You can now access the PGP Virtual Disk, and the data on the disk, using Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3.1 for Mac OS.
