Protection Engine for Cloud Services Protection Engine for NAS

Issue/Introduction

You would like to know what versions of Java are supported by Symantec Protection Engine (SPE) for Network Attached Storage (NAS) and Symantec Protection Engine (SPE) for Cloud Services (CS).

Resolution

Starting with SPE 9.0.0, SPE supports both Oracle and Open Java

Please note: If access to the legacy Java UI is desired, then you will need to run Oracle JRE.  This is because Oracle JRE is the only version of Java that supports loading of java plug-in applets in the browser.  Oracle JRE is therefore needed to load the browser plug-in to render the applet UI.

The following Java versions are expected to work with Symantec Protection Engine and are supported unless otherwise noted:

64-bit SPE (Supports only 64-bit Java)

Note : Java installation has a bin directory. For example, "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_361\bin". Ensure that this bin directory path is updated in the PATH environment variable.

SPE Version JRE 1.8 (8u232 to 8u251) JRE 1.8 8u261+ ** JRE 1.8 8u271 & 8u281 *** JRE 1.8 8u291+ *** JRE 1.8 8u301 and above
9.1.0 Y Y N Y Y
9.0.1 Y Y N Y Y
9.0.0 Y Y N Y Y
8.2.2 Y Y N Y Y
8.2.1 Y Y N Y Y

** See Additional Info Note 1 below.
*** These versions have known issues and are not supported with any SPE build. See our issues page for these versions.

Additional Information

Note 1: Starting with Java JRE 1.8.0_261 (8u261), Oracle moved to using the Microsoft Visual Studio 2017 tool chain to build releases. This move required changing the runtime library that JRE depends on (see the Oracle Java release notes for more information). Because of this change, SPE 8.1 and older are not expected to work with Java 8u261 and newer. They are not supported with Java 8u261 and newer.

Note 2: Not all versions of SPE listed here are still supported. Please see the end of service date matrix to determine if your version of SPE is still supported.

Note 3: Java 8 is the last major version of Java to offer JRE, which is what is supported for SPE UI and/or SPE RESTAPI up to current version of 9.1.0. This is noted in the Java 11 Release Notes.
