FEATURE REQUEST: Request for Better Encryption Compatibility Between Apple iOS and BlackBerry Mobile Devices

Desktop Email Encryption

In a corporate environment users may face problems decrypting or replying to encrypted emails.

This issue might occur when sending encrypted email from BlackBerry to iOS and from iOS to BlackBerry devices using Symantec Encryption products.

The encryption encoding format for email sent from or to users with mobile devices may not compatible.

  • "Symantec Encryption Desktop" (previously known as PGP Desktop) may send and receive mail in PGP/MIME, PGP Partitioned or PGP-EML formats.
  • The "PGP Support package for Blackberry" only supports PGP/MIME or PGP Partitioned formats.  PGP Partitioned is the default format when sending mails from a BlackBerry device.  PGP-EML, the preferred encoding of "Symantec Mobile Encryption for iOS" cannot be decrypted on BlackBerry devices.
  • Apple iOS devices with "Symantec Mobile Encryption for iOS" have the best user experience using the PGP-EML format.  PGP/MIME or PGP Partition formats are supported and messages can be properly decrypted.  However,  when attempting to "Reply" to messages from the iOS device, the TO, CC and SUBJECT fields are not automatically populated.  These fields must then be manually entered.

Symantec Corporation is committed to product quality and satisfied customers. This Feature Request is currently being considered by Symantec Corporation to be addressed in a forthcoming version of the product.

As usage of PGP Partitioned as encoding format is not satisfying neither for iOS users, nor for BlackBerry users, Symantec Technical Support filed a Feature Request to add following product feature:

  • This request is to assure that mail secure exchange between PGP Users with BlackBerry and iOS devices is possible

  • Improve iOS functionality to provide better capability for PGP/MIME (mostly populating the fields for reply to PGP/MIME messages)

  • Improve the Blackberry Support Package provide support for PGP-EML on the BlackBerry platform

  • Improve the PGP Partitioned usability for iOS and BlackBerry

  • Improve management of Default Encoding (which is covered in ETrack 3092075)
There is no committed date for this request from the Endpoint Encryption Product Management team, nor from the Endpoint Encryption Engineering team at this time.
Please be sure to refer back to this document periodically as any changes to the status of the request will be reflected here.
