How to disable scanning of compressed files within Symantec Endpoint Protection

Issue/Introduction

This document describes how to configure an Antivirus and Antispyware Policy from within the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager so that managed Symantec Endpoint Protection clients do not scan within compressed files.

Resolution

To fully disable scanning within compressed files, it is necessary to disable compressed files scanning in the following Antivirus and Antispyware Policy locations:

  • Administrator-Defined Scans
  • Administrator On-Demand Scans
  • Internet Email Auto-Protect
  • Microsoft Outlook Auto-Protect
  • Lotus Notes Auto-Protect

 

 

Disabling compressed files scanning for Administrator-Defined Scans:

  1. Open the Antivirus and Antispyware Policy
  2. Click Administrator-Defined Scans
  3. Click the scheduled scan > click Edit
  4. Click Advanced Scanning Options... > remove the checkmark from Scan files inside compressed files > click OK > click OK
  5. Click OK to save the policy change(s)

Note: It is necessary to repeat steps 3 and 4 for every scheduled scan listed.

 

 

Disabling compressed files scanning for Administrator On-demand scans:

Note: Administrator On-demand scans specify the type of scan that will occur when an administrator actives a scan from the SEPM.

  1. Open the Antivirus and Antispyware Policy
  2. Click Administrator-Defined Scans
  3. Click Edit next to Administrator On-demand Scan settings
  4. Click Advanced Scanning Options... > remove the checkmark from Scan files inside compressed files > click OK > click OK
  5. Click OK to save the policy change

 

 

Disabling compressed files scanning for Internet Email Auto-Protect:

  1. Open the Antivirus and Antispyware Policy
  2. Click Internet Email Auto-Protect
  3. Remove the checkmark from Scan files inside compressed files
  4. Click OK to save the policy change

 

 

Disabling compressed files scanning for Microsoft Outlook Auto-Protect:

  1. Open the Antivirus and Antispyware Policy
  2. Click Microsoft Outlook Auto-Protect
  3. Remove the checkmark from Scan files inside compressed files
  4. Click OK to save the policy change

 

 

Disabling compressed files scanning for Lotus Notes Auto-Protect:

  1. Open the Antivirus and Antispyware Policy
  2. Click Lotus Notes Auto-Protect
  3. Remove the checkmark from Scan files inside compressed files
  4. Click OK to save the policy change
