How to disable adminisrator accounts in Symantec Messaging Gateway

An administrator has left the organization or moved to another role and company policy requires that their admin accounts be locked or otherwise disabled without being deleted.


Symantec Messaging Gateway (SMG) cannot currently lock or disable an administrator account. This feature is currently under consideration for a future release.


Via the Administration->Administrators->Edit Administrator page, you can take the following actions

  • The administrator account can be deleted.
  • The administrator account can have its password changed to limit access to the account.
  • The administrator account can have its rights limited, although at least one role must be set to "View"

Note: Caution should be taken when locking administrator accounts via a password change as the Password Recovery feature added in SMG v10.0.0, if enabled, may be used to circumvent this change.
