Issue/Introduction

How can a Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) client policy be exported from one client machine to another?

Situation: a number of mobile devices have internet access but rarely connect to the domain. Since the devices don't connect to the LAN they won't receive policy updates from the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM). Is there a way to manually update the client policy?

Cause

Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) policies are exported in .DAT format, and Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) Client accepts only .xml format. It is not possible to export a policy from a SEPM and import directly on a SEP client.

Resolution

Export policies from a Symantec Endpoint Protection client with correct policies to another Symantec Endpoint Protection client.

Choose a client which already has the correct policy that you want to place on target clients, then export this policy and import manually on offline client machines. The steps are outlined below.

1) Export the Policies from the SEP client machine already running the policy which needs to be transferred.

  • Open the SEP client.
  • Click on Help.
  • Click on Troubleshooting.
  • Under Management, click the Export button.
  • Export the policy in .xml format to the hard drive.

2) Send the policies to users via email or any other means, together with the steps on how to import policies.

3) Users import the policies into the SEP client installed on their machines.

Steps to Import:

  • Open the SEP client.
  • Click on Help.
  • Click on Troubleshooting.
  • Under Management, click the Import button.
  • Import the policy in .xml format from the hard drive.
