How to Uninstall and Reinstall LiveUpdate on SEPM 12.1.1101.401 RU1 MP1 (Enterprise Edition or Small Business Edition)

Symantec LiveUpdate needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled on a computer where Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) is already installed.

The version of LiveUpdate installed is not the version of LiveUpdate that ships with Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) 12.1.
This can cause LiveUpdate to not function for the SEP clients or the SEPM correctly.


The version of LiveUpdate installed is not the version of LiveUpdate that ships with Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) 12.1.


It is recommended that LiveUpdate installer be run from the installation directory.

The correct version of LiveUpdate for SEPM  12.1.1101.401 RU1 MP1should be
1.   Click Start > Control Panel.
2.   Click
Add/Remove Programs. ('Programs and Features' in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008)
3.   Click
4.   Click
5.   Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall LiveUpdate.
6.   Delete files/folders. (some of these files/folder will be gone from the uninstall)
             On a 32-bit OS:
                      C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate
- Delete this whole folder
                      C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate
                                   Delete the files:
Product.Inventory.LiveUpdate and Settings.LiveUpdate
             On a 64-bit OS:
                     C:\ProgramData\Symantec\LiveUpdate – Delete this whole folder
                     C:\Users\All Users\Symantec\LiveUpdate
                                  Delete the files:
Product.Inventory.LiveUpdate and Settings.LiveUpdate (ALL of them).

7.   Install LiveUpdate (<drive>:\SEPM\lusetup.exe) from the original SEPM install media, (FileConnect download), 8.   Register SEPM with LiveUpdate:
       A. Click
Start, then Run.
       B. Type
cmd, then click OK. This will bring up a command prompt.
       C.  At the command prompt type cd and the path to lucatalog.exe:
cd C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\bin       (Enterprise Edition)
cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\bin       (Enterprise Edition 64-bit)
cd C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Protection Center\bin                 (Small Business Edition)
cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Symantec Protection Center\bin                 (Small Business Edition 64-bit)
9.   Type
lucatalog.exe -cleanup  When the command line path returns, cleanup is done.
10. Type
lucatalog.exe -forcedupdate

 * If BackupExec is also installed it will also
need to be re-registered with LiveUpdate from the command prompt, depending on the version of BE.
C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backupexec\beupdateops -addbe       OR
C:\ Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\beupdateops -addbe    OR
C:\LU\beupdateops -addbe -optout
 * If Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE) is installed, re-register it with LiveUpdate from the command prompt.
                   From the command prompt, in the folder "
                   Run the command:
regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSMSE\<version number>\Server\SAVFMSELU.dll"
11.  Click Start, then Run.
12. Type
luall, click OK to test LiveUpdate. You may also want to test LiveUpdate's functionality in the SEPM (Admin tab > Servers > Local Site > Download LiveUpdate Content
