Cannot release the message. It has either been released or was unable to contact the SMTP host

ERROR - com.brightmail.common.BrightmailException: null ; nested exception is:
         javax.mail.MessagingException: IOException while sending message;
  nested exception is:
        java.io.FileNotFoundException: <full path to the spam message on disk> (No such file or directory)

Cause

This issue occurs when the message that is being released does not exist on disk.

Resolution

  • Attempt to view the message in the Spam Quarantine.
  • Delete the message manually from the Spam Quarantine after confirming that the message cannot be viewed.

Deleting the message manually will clear out the entries from the database.  Also ensure that Spam Expunger is running (Status > Scheduled Tasks > Expungers) successfully.  This will clear out spam message entries from the database when the message gets older than the configured "Days to store in Quarantine before deleting" setting at the time expunger runs.
