Issue/Introduction

Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1 clients (SEP 12.1) cannot update their definitions.  Attempts to run LiveUpdate result in an error that the configured LiveUpdate source server is not a valid server.

The SEP client System log (Virus and Spyware Protection Logs) contains:

[date] [time]  Error LiveUpdate Manager LiveUpdate encountered an error: Server is not a valid LiveUpdate server (0xA1000006).

Cause

The LiveUpdate policy that the SEP 12.1 client has received from its Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) does not direct its LiveUpdate Engine (LUE) to a location from which SEP 12.1 content is available.

Resolution

If this location is an internal LiveUpdate Administrator 2.x (LUA 2.x) server or Legacy LiveUpdate Administration Utility 1.x (LUAU 1.x) server,  please ensure that it is properly configured to download and make available the SEP 12.1 components that the client requires.  Also check carefully that there are no typos in the server name, path, or port.

Once the SEP 12.1 client is directed toward a source that is hosting materials that it needs, the client will successfully update.

Alternately, do not use LiveUpdate and instead configure the managed SEP client to receive its contents from its SEPM or via GUP.
