Issue/Introduction

When trying to run a reconfigure on a solution in Symantec Installation Manager (SIM) or when running aexconfig to set the SVCID credentials, there are errors in the logviewer and the configure operations fail.

We checked the services and found that all services were running, except the Altiris Service (AeXSvc) itself. This service was missing.

Failed in SetServiceCredential setting 'AeXSvc' service to use {APPID.EN_US}

Altiris.NS.Exceptions.SetIdentityException: Failed in SetServiceCredential setting 'AeXSvc' service

Failed to OpenService. Error=80070424.

Cause

Failed upgrade to 7.1 SP2 appears to have deleted the Altiris Service

Resolution

We ran a repair on the Altiris_ns_7_1_sp2_x64.msi, which recreated the Altiris Service. Another way to create the service is to open a command prompt and CD into the c:\window\microsoft .NEt\framework_x64\v2.0.50727 folder and run installutil.exe "c:\program files\altiris\notification server\bin\aexsvc.exe"

Make sure any operations involving configure type activities, such as upgrades, reconfigures, or solution installs, are run while logged in as the AppID or service account, and SIM needs to be run with right click and use the 'run as administrator' option. Command prompts should also be run as administrator.
