Mail Security for Domino

Rapid Release definitions are not getting updated on a 64-bit deployment of Symantec Mail Security for Domino (SMSDOM) and IBM Domino server.

Symantec Mail Security for Domino (SMSDOM) debug logging may show the following lines:

SMSDOM DEBUG [  nntask 10-0E68-08:00:00 01/31/12 ] Launching FTP script: C:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSDOM\RR\RAPIDRELEASE.BAT
SMSDOM DEBUG [  nntask 02-0E68-08:02:01 01/31/12 ] FTP Script exited with error code 203
SMSDOM DEBUG [  nntask 02-0E68-08:02:01 01/31/12 ] RR: Unknown error in ftp process
SMSDOM DEBUG [  nntask 10-0E68-08:02:01 01/31/12 ] Released global file lock

Additionally, the Domino server console may show the following line:

01/31/2012 07:46:44 AM  SMSDOM ERROR: Unable to complete LiveUpdate session after 3 attempt(s) (FTP error).

Symantec is currently investigating this problem and will update this article as soon as more information will become available.

Meanwhile, a temporary remedy can be implemented by following the steps below:

  1. Login to the Windows 2008 server using an administrator account.
  2. Open "System Properties" (Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings).
  3. Click on the "Advanced" tab then on the "Environment Variables..." button.
  4. Under the "User variables for Administrator" pane, edit both the "TEMP" and "TMP" entries.
  5. Replace each entry with the following string: "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp"
  6. Confirm that the changes are applied as in the sample picture:
  7. Click OK
  8. If possible, restart the server.

The Rapid Release definitions should now become updated at each next occurrence.
