Issue/Introduction
Symantec Security Response has updated the file naming conventions that are used for the statically named Intelligent Updater (IU) packages that are posted to the publicly accessible folders. This update effects both Rapid Release and Certified IU packages.
Resolution
The statically named virus definition update files are often used when customers write scripts to automatically download the virus definitions. These virus definition files are located on our public folders in the following locations:
- Certified definitions (Intelligent Updaters) https://definitions.symantec.com/defs/download/symantec_enterprise/static/index.html
- Rapid Release definitions https://definitions.symantec.com/defs/download/symantec_enterprise/rapidrelease/sequence/index.html
Notes:
- On January 13, 2020 Norton links for definition content were replaced with the symantec_enterprise root
- On December 21, 2019, the FTP servers will be fully decommissioned and the http hosted folders servers will remain as the sole source.
- On August 27, 2004, Symantec removed the following folder from the FTP site: /public/english_us_canada/antivirus_definitions/norton_antivirus/beta/.
- On February 8, 2005, Symantec moved the location of all virus definitions FTP downloads from /public/english_us_canada/antivirus_definitions/ to /AVDEFS/.
- Effective Thursday, August 18, 2005, U.S. Pacific Time, Symantec will no longer release virus definitions that are sized to fit a set of standard 1.44 MB floppy disks. Due to the increasing size of virus definitions files and the supplanting of floppy disks with other technologies, we will no longer release definitions in this format. Definitions will continue be available through all other current methods.
