Issue/Introduction

How to change the hostname, mta hostname, or rename a Symantec Messaging Gateway (SMG), formerly known as "Symantec Brightmail Gateway".

Resolution

 

To change just the hostname via the web graphical user interface (web GUI, also known as "Control Center"), please follow the steps below:

• Navigate to Administration->Hosts->Configuration.
• On the Host Configuration page, click on the hostname of the appliance.
• On the Edit Host Configuration page, modify the hostname in the "Host name:" field. 
• Click on Save.
• Wait until the message "The server is now updating settings. This may take several minutes.  Please wait..." disappears and the Host Configuration page is displayed.

 

To change just the mta hostname of the appliance via the Control Center, please follow these steps:

• Navigate to Administration->Hosts->Configuration
• On the Host Configuration page, click on the hostname of the appliance.
• On the Edit Host Configuration page, click on the SMTP tab.
• Click on the Advanced Settings button at the bottom of the page.
• On the SMTP Advanced Settings page, modify the mta hostname in the "MTA host name:" field.
• Click on the Continue button to return to the SMTP tab on the Edit Host Configuration page.
• Click on Save.
• Wait until the message "The server is now updating settings. This may take several minutes.  Please wait..." disappears and the Host Configuration page is displayed.

 

To rename the appliance via the Control Center, both the hostname and the mta hostname need to be changed. Please follow these steps to rename the appliance:

• Navigate to Administration->Hosts->Configuration.
• On the Host Configuration page, click on the hostname of the appliance.
• On the Edit Host Configuration page, modify the hostname in the "Host name:" field. 
• While on the same Edit Host Configuration page, click on the SMTP tab.
• Click on the Advanced Settings button at the bottom of the page.
• On the SMTP Advanced Settings page, modify the mta hostname in the "MTA host name:" field.
• Click on the Continue button to return to the SMTP tab on the Edit Host Configuration page.
• Visually verify that the hostname on the Edit Host Configuration page is the new hostname of the appliance and is the same value as the mta hostname from the SMTP Advanced Settings page.
• Click on Save.
• Wait until the message "The server is now updating settings. This may take several minutes.  Please wait..." disappears and the Host Configuration page is displayed.
