Issue/Introduction

After entering your passphrase on the PGP BootGuard screen, you receive the following error:

BootGuard loading stage 2... PGPWDE disk data are corrupted. Please use PGP recovery disk.

You may also see a blinking cursor instead of the error message above.

Cause

 This may occur if the Master Boot Record (MBR) on the disk becomes corrupted.

Resolution

WARNING:  Using a fixmbr will wipe a MBR clean.  If you are unsure of other applications that are using the MBR you should create a ticket and explore if there are any other options before proceeding with this fix.  Backups should always be on hand before performing this operation as this could lead to a loss of data.   If backups have not been created you will need to make an image of your disk, and transfer that to a new drive.   Use the drive with the image for all testing and troubleshooting so that the original remains intact.

 

All pgpwde commands can be run from:

 

         C:\Program Files\PGP Corporation\PGP Desktop

         or for 64bit

         C:\Program Files (x86)\PGP Corporation\PGP Desktop

 

X is the disk number that the disk is mounted and enumerated to. You can determine this using the following command:

 

pgpwde --enum

 

To repair the MBR, connect the hard drive to a working system with PGP Desktop and use the following command:

 

pgpwde --disk X --fixmbr --passphrase <passphrase>

 

Once this is complete, put the drive back in the affected system and use the PGP Recovery CD to rebuild the location of the PGPWDE files used by BootGuard.  Alternatively, you can run the recover command:

 

         pgpwde --recover --disk X --passphrase <passphrase>
