Issue/Introduction

After rebooting when PGP Desktop is installed, you receive the following error:

There is a problem establishing PGP Whole Disk detection of removeable media. You will not be able to unlock removeable media.

When you open PGP Desktop, the Encrypt Whole Disk or Partition option is not displayed in the PGP Disk Control box or the work area.

Resolution

This error can occur when the UpperFilters Windows registry value or an entry for PGP WDE (pgpwded) is missing or deleted. This issue is resolved by adding the missing registry entry for PGP WDE.

Warning: Incorrectly editing the registry may severely damage your system. Before making changes to the registry, you should back up any valued data on the computer. For more information on backing up the registry see the following article on the Microsoft support site:

How to back up and restore the registry

The registry entry can be added by importing the value from another computer or by manually adding the information to the registry.

Other recommendations before importing or manually editing the registry:

  1. Uninstall PGP Desktop and reboot the computer.
  2. Create a System Restore point for your Windows computer.

Export the registry key

Windows XP

Note: There may be more than one {4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} folder in the registry. You may need to browse the folders for the pgpwded entry. In most instances the value is in the third folder in the list.
