Issue/Introduction

When attempting to open a file which is encrypted to your PGP public key, you receive the following error and the file fails to open:

File is encrypted. Private key is required to decrypt it. No private key in the default keyring to unlock the encrypted session key OpenPGP decoding failed: PGP no encryption key

Resolution

This error can occur when downloading an encrypted file from a FTP site using the Ipswitch FTP client. By default, the Ipswitch FTP client is configured to decrypt and verify encrypted files using OpenPGP. Therefore, when the Ipswitch client attempts to decrypt the file, it displays the error as the file is encrypted to your PGP public key and not to any OpenPGP keys in the client.

To resolve this issue, remove the option to use OpenPGP in the Ipswitch FTP client.

1. Open the Ipswitch FTP program.
2. From the file menu, click Tools > Options.
3. In the left pane, select OpenPGP.
4. Remove the checkmark next to Always decrypt and verify encrypted and signed.
5. Click OK to update the options.
