Issue/Introduction

When closing PGP Desktop, the error message The automatic backup of your keyring has failed is displayed.

Resolution

This error can occur when the PGP keyring is located in a folder that is inaccessible and the option to backup your keys when exiting PGP Desktop is enabled. By default, the PGP keyring is located in the PGP folder within My Documents.

For example, this error can occur when your My Documents folder is redirected to a network share and the network share is unavailable.

Use the following to confirm the location of your keyring files

  1. Open PGP Desktop
  2. Select the PGP Keys Control box.
  3. Below PGP Keys, right-click All Keys and select Properties. The location of your keyring files are displayed.

Backup Keyring options

  1. Open PGP Desktop
  2. Click Tools then select Options.
  3. Click the Keys tab.

The options to backup your keyring are displayed below Backup. You can specify a location other than the default keyring folder.
